Tomb of Nguyen Huu Canh in his hometown

QUANG BINH – The tomb of famous general Nguyen Huu Canh is located in a charming landscape with its back leaning against An Ma mountain, facing the Kien Giang river.

Tomb of Le Thanh Marquis Nguyen Huu Canh is located on a side hill of the An Ma mountain range, in Truong Thuy commune, Le Thuy district. The mausoleum is rectangular in shape with the back facing west leaning against An Ma mountain, the east side facing the Kien Giang river.

The straight road leads to the tomb of famous general Nguyen Huu Canh.

Nguyen Huu Canh was born in the year of the Tiger (1650) in Van Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province. He was a great general in the reign of Lord Minh Nguyen Phuc Chu (Hien Tong Hieu Minh Emperor 1691-1725).

Coming from a family of martial arts generals, knowledgeable about national affairs, and having witnessed many tragedies of contemporary society, he soon got involved in the war.

He died in the Year of the Dragon in 1700, was buried at Cu Lao Pho, next to Tran Bien Palace, Dong Nai. In 1802, Nguyen Huu Canh’s remains were converted by his descendants and buried in the Truong Thuy commune.

Due to war and chaos, his grave was not smoked for a long time, leading to its loss. In 1995, descendants found Nguyen Huu Canh’s grave in the Truong Thuy commune. In 2013, the new mausoleum was greatly restored. After the restoration process, the mausoleum of the famous general of the Nguyen Dynasty took on a new look with many items built of superficial stone.

Nguyen Huu Canh’s tombstone is carved with blue stone (marble) with a common pattern at the end of the Nguyen Dynasty. Beer is 1.2m high. The front of the stele facing the tomb is engraved with 3 lines of Chinese characters translated as:

Right line: The first pioneer in the South of the Nguyen dynasty. Middle line: Grave of Vinh An Marquis Nguyen Huu Kinh. Left line: Your 4-generation grandson, who is the ruler of the heroic army, Ngu Duc Hau, Nguyen Huu Man, established a tombstone in Gia Long’s childhood.

The backside of the stele translates as: July 16, 1925, Nguyen Huu Bai, the director of the Institute of Privy, the great minister of the Crown Prince, the Vice President, Phuc Mon Ba University of the Vo Hien Palace, brought her son Thi Duong to worship and set up this tombstone. .

Thanks to this tombstone, descendants and scholars have recognized his tomb after a long time of being lost.

Tomb of Lord Nguyen Huu Canh is ranked as a national historical relic, becoming a meaningful destination that should not be missed when traveling to Quang Binh.

After his death, the Nguyen Dynasty posthumously honored his merits with great appreciation. He is considered as the “Superior God”, the “King of the Nation God”.

In front of the tomb, left and right is two lotus ponds. However, in recent years, the lake cannot store water even in the rainy season, so there are no ornamental plants inside. Inside the lake on the right is an old well, built into a well above the water level. When it was found in 1995, this area was hilly and wild, sparsely populated.

The land outside the campus is used by local people to grow crops and short-term varieties. The campus of the mausoleum is large, but there are still a few shady trees and few landscapes.

About 25 km north of the mausoleum, the Temple of the Lord Nguyen Huu Canh is located in Van Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh. The temple is currently taken care of and worshiped by its descendants.

In the last two years, due to the Covid-19 epidemic, few visitors have come to visit. However, every year on the occasion of the Tet holiday, the day of his death, local people and the government organize a ceremony to visit and burn incense.

Inside the temple, there is a statue of him, and on both sides, there are two parallel sentences: Migrants set up a career in the central region, they will never forget it / Expanding the borders of the southern provinces for thousands of years, still remember it”.

In addition to Quang Binh, people in many provinces such as Quang Nam, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho… also set up a temple to worship Nguyen Huu Canh. In addition, his name is also used to name schools, streets in many localities..
