Manchester United Nears Deal for Carlos Baleba
Manchester United is close to finalizing a deal to sign midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The transfer

Manchester United is on the verge of completing a significant transfer deal for midfielder Carlos Baleba, valued at £65 million. The club aims to bolster its squad ahead of the new season, having already made key additions to the midfield. Baleba, a 22-year-old talent from Brighton, has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, initially pursued last summer. However, a hefty £100 million price tag had stalled negotiations until recent performance dips and injuries led to a price reduction.
If the deal goes through, Baleba will become the most expensive signing for manager Michael Carrick this summer, following the arrivals of Andrey Santos for £50 million and Youri Tielemans for £35 million. These signings reflect United's commitment to rejuvenating their midfield, similar to their previous strategies of targeting forwards like Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.
Despite strengthening the midfield, United still has pressing needs, particularly at left-back. With Luke Shaw now 31 years old, his ability to handle the demanding Premier League schedule is in question. Additionally, young prospect Harry Amass may leave on loan or in a permanent transfer soon.
Following the Baleba acquisition, United's football director Jason Wilcox is expected to shift focus to Lewis Hall of Newcastle. The 21-year-old left-back is highly regarded and has been identified as a primary target to enhance United's defense. However, securing Hall will not be straightforward, as he is under contract until June 2029 and is valued between £60 million and £70 million.
Newcastle considers Hall an indispensable player and is unlikely to entertain offers. Nonetheless, United's financial strength could challenge Newcastle's stance. The allure of playing for a prestigious club like Manchester United, especially with the prospect of Champions League football, might persuade Hall to consider a move, particularly given Newcastle's lack of European competition next season.
If the asking price for Hall proves too steep, United is preparing alternative options. Joaquin Seys from Club Brugge is being monitored, although Brugge is also reluctant to sell unless an offer exceeds £30 million. Furthermore, reports suggest that Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander, a promising 19-year-old who impressed in the U19 European Championship, is on United's radar. Salinas has a release clause of €16 million, approximately £13.7 million, but United will face competition from Barcelona for his signature.
