HooXi Reflects on Astralis' Loss to G2 at EWC 2026

Astralis faced a disappointing exit from the Esports World Cup 2026 after losing to G2 in the Round of 16. Despite a strong start with a convincing 13-6 victory on their map pick, Ancient, the team faltered in subsequent matches, losing 13-6 on Dust2 and 13-7 on Inferno. Rasmus 'HooXi' Nielsen, the team's captain, shared insights into the series and the current state of the team.

In the opening match on Ancient, Astralis showcased a well-coordinated strategy that caught G2 off guard. HooXi noted, "We smashed them completely on our map pick and felt like the plan worked." The team's ability to maintain composure during chaotic situations was crucial, with successful clutches and effective communication driving their early success.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically on Dust2. G2 applied constant pressure on the B site, leading to a 13-6 victory. HooXi explained that while some might blame communication issues on language barriers, the problems stemmed from minor positional mistakes and missed opportunities for early kills. "When we found our footing it was just too late," he lamented.

The series concluded on Inferno, where G2 secured a 13-7 win. Astralis struggled on their Counter-Terrorist side, losing key rounds that allowed G2 to build a significant lead. HooXi took responsibility for the team's defensive shortcomings, stating that he and teammate Victor 'Staehr' Staehr need to improve their site holds in future matches.

Beyond the match, HooXi discussed the recent changes within the Astralis camp, including the hiring of Filip 'NEO' Kubski as head coach and a new performance coach. He expressed optimism about these changes, noting, "Neo is coming in with a new perspective on the game and trying to fix some stuff here and there and so far so good." The team is currently adjusting to new routines, which include map preparation and timeout strategies.

Reflecting on his personal performance, HooXi mentioned that he adopted a more measured approach during the tournament. "Maybe I was better at this tournament at taking a breath when I needed to and actually play the situation correctly instead of just running in like a madman," he said.

As Astralis prepares for the remainder of the competitive season, HooXi emphasized the need to refine their playbook and learn from their experiences at the Esports World Cup.
