In a commanding display of cricket, India reached 447-8 against Sri Lanka at the end of a rain-affected day two of the first Test match held in Galle. The standout performer for India was Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a career-best 167 runs, marking his maiden Test century.
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, India began the day with a solid foundation, having scored 288-2 on day one after winning the toss and opting to bat. However, rain delayed the start of play, washing out the entire morning session and much of the second. Fortunately, the weather improved in the afternoon, allowing for just over three hours of play.
When play resumed, Rishabh Pant, who had been aggressive earlier, fell victim to debutant off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha, becoming his first Test wicket after scoring 39 runs. Lokesh Rahul, who had retired hurt on day one due to cramps, returned to the crease but was dismissed for 82 runs, caught at short leg off Nuwantha’s bowling.
Padikkal's innings was crucial, as he reached 150 runs off 215 balls, showcasing his skill and composure. However, the Indian side faced a mini-collapse, losing four wickets for just 70 runs after the resumption of play. Ravindra Jadeja was trapped lbw by Prabath Jayasuriya for 13 runs, and Padikkal was stumped in the 92nd over, leaving India at 377-7.
Despite the setbacks, Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar steadied the innings, adding 55 runs off 66 balls. Jurel eventually scored 50 runs before being dismissed by Jayasuriya, but India managed to cross the 400-run mark in the final session of the day.
As the match progresses, India will look to build on their strong position in the first Test against Sri Lanka, continuing their quest for victory.
