Teachers Struggling with Exhaustion: A Call for Support

Teachers Struggling with Exhaustion: A Call for Support

On October 10, coinciding with World Mental Health Day, many educators in Vietnam gathered in Ho Chi Minh City for Healing Day, a unique event dedicated to addressing the mental health challenges faced by teachers. Despite their role in uplifting and supporting students, many teachers reported feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

During the event, a young teacher working in a special education facility shared her struggles, stating, "I feel exhausted, especially when I have to manage over 20 children with special educational needs." Her emotional account resonated with many present, leading to tears and a collective acknowledgment of the pressures educators face.

Minh Ngoc, a teacher at a non-public school in Ho Chi Minh City and a coordinator at the event, noted that many educators shared heartfelt stories about their daily challenges. Teachers are under immense pressure to ensure the safety and well-being of their students while also dealing with expectations from families and the wider community.

The event was designed to provide a safe space for teachers to express their feelings and seek support. It featured activities focused on psychological resonance and somatic experiences, alongside meditation and creative movement exercises. The aim was to help educators find peace and improve their overall mental well-being.

Lương Dũng Nhân, a member of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that while previous Healing Days focused on youth, this year's event was specifically tailored for teachers—those who often support others but rarely receive support themselves.

As teachers shared their experiences, many expressed a desire to leave the profession due to the overwhelming stress. The event served as a reminder that teachers are not just educators; they are individuals with their own struggles and needs. By fostering a supportive community, the Healing Day aimed to help teachers find happiness and, in turn, create happier classrooms.

Since its inception in 2024, Healing Day has welcomed over 521 participants and engaged 380 volunteers nationwide, highlighting the growing recognition of the need for mental health support in the teaching profession.
