Critical Moment Approaches in Northeast Kharkov Conflict
The situation in Northeast Kharkov is reaching a critical juncture as Russian forces intensify their

Ukraine has achieved an unexpected victory in Donetsk, moving closer to Oleksandrivka amidst a fierce counteroffensive aimed at pushing back Russian troops. According to the latest assessment from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces have been actively conducting counteroffensive operations across various fronts, while Russian forces maintain their attacks without confirmed territorial gains in most areas.
On October 7, ISW reported that Russian troops were conducting limited offensive operations in the northern Sumy region, but had not made any confirmed advances. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces were also launching counteroffensives in this area. In the east, Russian forces reportedly infiltrated Ukrainian positions near eastern Vovchansk in Kharkov province. After a suspected infiltration attempt, Ukrainian troops conducted strikes against Russian forces in southeastern Khrypuny.
In the Kupiansk area, Russian forces continued their attacks near Kupiansk, Kivsharivka, and Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi on October 6 and 7, but ISW did not record any confirmed territorial gains for Russia. Ukrainian forces are also counterattacking in the northern Kupiansk region. According to a source linked to the Russian Western Military Group, Ukrainian troops still control Novoplatonivka, Hrekivka, and Druzheliubivka, contradicting earlier Russian claims of control over these settlements.
In the Lyman area, Ukrainian forces are continuing their counteroffensive towards the eastern bank of the Zherebets River. Russian forces are attempting to halt Ukraine's advances as part of what ISW has termed the 'Vivaldi Operation.' A Russian military blogger associated with the Kremlin acknowledged that Ukrainian forces are actively conducting counteroffensive operations along the Zherebets River, with manpower and drone advantages helping Ukraine prevent Russian forces from consolidating positions near Lyman.
In another area of Donetsk province, Russian forces reportedly infiltrated Ukrainian positions east of Kramatorsk. Following this, Ukrainian troops conducted strikes against Russian positions west of Malynivka. In the Dobropillia area, Russian forces continued their attacks on October 6 and 7 but did not achieve any confirmed territorial gains, while Ukrainian forces were conducting counteroffensives in the northeastern part of the city.
Russian attacks also persisted in the Huliaipole area during the same period, but ISW has not recorded any new territorial advances by Russian forces. In western Zaporizhzhia province, Russian troops conducted limited offensive operations, likely attempting to break through Orikhiv from both the west and east. However, ISW reported no confirmed territorial gains for Russia in this area.
The latest developments follow Ukraine's recent operations to clear out invading forces in Kharkov province. On October 5, Ukrainian troops pushed Russian infiltrators out of approximately 10 square kilometers of territory east of Vovchansk. Earlier, a Ukrainian brigade operating in northern Kharkov released a video on October 3 showing the results of military operations in a forested area northeast of Vovchanski Khutory, east of Vovchansk. ISW notes that the battlefield situation continues to change rapidly, and some territorial control claims from both sides have yet to be independently verified.
