Construction of Laos-Vietnam Friendship University Begins

The construction of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship University, covering an area of 50 hectares in the capital city of Vientiane, marks a significant step in educational collaboration between the two countries. This public university is designed to accommodate approximately 4,000 students, including 500 high school students, with the remainder being undergraduates and postgraduates.

The official signing of the agreement between the governments of Vietnam and Laos took place on October 8, coinciding with the visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Khai to Laos. The university will be located in Danxang village, Xaythany district, adjacent to the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Park.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, this institution will be a modern, high-quality educational facility that adheres to advanced standards for energy efficiency and digital transformation. Its mission is to develop a skilled workforce that meets the sustainable development needs of Laos, focusing on fields where Laos has demand and Vietnam has strengths.

The university is also expected to serve as a hub for connecting educational institutions, intellectuals, businesses, and the youth of both countries in areas such as training, scientific research, innovation, and cultural exchange. Minister Hoang Minh Son emphasized the importance of closely collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Sports of Laos to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Laos' Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Sports, Thongsalith Mangnormek, highlighted the project's significance for human resource development and enhancing educational cooperation, which will strengthen the special relationship between the two nations. The Lao side has expressed its commitment to facilitating the safe and timely execution of the project.

The establishment of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship University was agreed upon by the high-level leaders of both countries at the end of 2025. This initiative is expected to open new avenues for cooperation, expanding learning opportunities and enhancing local training capabilities, fostering deeper collaboration between universities in both nations rather than primarily relying on Lao students studying in Vietnam.

During discussions with Lao Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith in Vientiane, Prime Minister Le Minh Khai announced that Vietnam will construct two schools for the people of Huaphan and Champasak provinces, with a total investment of 2 million USD, contributing to the educational and human resource development in Laos.
