Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States has taken an unexpected turn as he arrived without a significant delegation of top business executives. Initially, there were reports suggesting that Xi would be accompanied by a large group of corporate leaders, but this was not the case.
According to China's Xinhua News Agency, the delegation accompanying Xi included key government officials such as the Chief of the General Office, Tai Ying, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, but no business leaders were mentioned. This contrasts sharply with previous reports from Reuters, which indicated that Xi would bring a robust contingent of Chinese CEOs to Washington.
The absence of these top executives has led to speculation about the progress of trade negotiations between the two nations. The South China Morning Post suggested that the lack of business leaders in Xi's entourage might reflect limited advancements in discussions regarding trade agreements. Sources cited by Reuters indicated that the White House had other priorities on the agenda for Xi's visit and was hesitant to include representatives from companies believed to have ties to the Chinese military.
Meanwhile, American business leaders had hoped for a strong presence of Chinese partners, ranging from electric vehicle manufacturers to agricultural companies. The White House has yet to comment on the situation.
In contrast, during a previous visit to Beijing in May, former President Donald Trump was accompanied by a delegation of billionaires, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, which was the wealthiest group ever to travel with a U.S. president to China.
On September 23, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, where they were greeted by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Melania noted that Trump personally welcomed Xi due to their "wonderful relationship." The welcoming ceremony was marked by a red carpet along the runway, flanked by a military honor guard of F-22 and F-16 fighter jets, along with a flyover by B-1 bombers.
