Banks Issue Bonds with Interest Rates Up to 10% Annually

In August 2026, numerous banks in Vietnam successfully issued bonds with interest rates as high as 10% per year. According to data from the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX), the banking sector accounted for a significant portion of these issuances, with 23 batches totaling 23.9 trillion VND.

For instance, Vietcombank issued four batches of bonds worth 2.85 trillion VND, with interest rates ranging from 7.87% to 8% per year. Similarly, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) released five batches of corporate bonds valued at 2.35 trillion VND, applying an interest rate of 8.2% per year.

Other banks also participated in this trend. PVcomBank issued two batches of bonds in August with interest rates between 9.6% and 9.8%, totaling 1.5 trillion VND. TPBank released two batches with a rate of 9.1% per year, amounting to 3 trillion VND. Additionally, VietABank issued bonds worth 100 billion VND at a rate of 9%, significantly higher than the prevailing savings interest rates.

Moreover, Sacombank issued three batches of bonds, with a total value exceeding 3.2 trillion VND, and interest rates reaching 10% per year. This increase in bond interest rates indicates that banks are facing substantial pressure to secure funding, as these rates are several percentage points higher than many long-term savings products currently available.

In recent months, the interest rates on bank bonds have been rising sharply. Starting from around 8% per year at the end of June, rates increased to 9% in July and officially hit 10% at the beginning of August, marking an increase of approximately 3 to 4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This trend suggests that banks are intensifying their bond issuance efforts and are willing to accept higher costs to cover capital shortages.
