Experts Predict Surprising Gold Prices for Next Week

After a week marked by volatility, the majority of Wall Street experts are maintaining a positive outlook for gold prices in the upcoming week. Following a sharp decline, analysts are still optimistic about the precious metal's performance.

Review of Last Week's Gold Prices

Gold prices experienced considerable fluctuations last week. The upward momentum at the beginning of the week was quickly reversed. A weakening U.S. dollar and ongoing concerns regarding U.S. fiscal policy had initially supported the precious metal. However, the firm statements made by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole conference shifted market expectations regarding monetary policy. Investors are now recalibrating their expectations for a potential interest rate hike in September.

Gold prices opened the week at approximately $4,618.79 per ounce. On Monday, prices continued to rise as investors assessed the impact of previously announced Treasury bond buybacks, particularly concerning long-term yields and the sustainability of U.S. public debt.

This upward trend persisted into Tuesday, with gold reaching a weekly high of $4,697.66 per ounce. However, the upward momentum began to wane on Wednesday, as core PCE inflation data and second-quarter GDP figures did not significantly alter market perceptions of the U.S. economy's resilience amidst high inflation pressures.

As bond yields increased, gold quickly fell below the $4,600 mark. Market participants grew more cautious ahead of Chairman Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole. Selling pressure intensified on Thursday, driven by heightened expectations of a Fed rate hike, a stronger U.S. dollar, and rising short-term Treasury yields, all of which are unfavorable for non-yielding assets like gold.

Gold prices dipped to $4,566.17 per ounce on Thursday but rebounded to $4,631.98 per ounce at the start of Friday's session. However, this recovery was short-lived, as the hawkish tone of Warsh's speech quickly shifted market sentiment to a negative outlook, with gold prices dropping over 1% within hours of the address.

Ultimately, gold settled at a weekly low of $4,445.40 per ounce just before 3 PM Eastern Time on Friday.

Forecast for Next Week's Gold Prices

According to the latest weekly gold survey from a precious metals-focused site, Wall Street analysts maintain a relatively positive sentiment towards gold, even after the sharp decline at the end of the week. Meanwhile, individual investor optimism has decreased compared to the previous week.

This week, 21 analysts participated in the survey. While opinions on Wall Street are somewhat divided, the group forecasting rising gold prices holds the largest share. Ten analysts, or 48%, believe gold prices will increase in the coming week. Six analysts, accounting for 29%, predict further declines, while five analysts, or 24%, expect prices to remain stable, accumulating around the new low or suggesting that market influences are currently balanced.

In the individual investor segment, an online survey attracted 207 votes. Optimism remains dominant but has waned following heavy selling pressure on gold at the end of the week. Of the respondents, 121 investors, or 59%, anticipate a recovery in gold prices next week. Conversely, 44 investors, or 21%, expect prices to decrease, while 42 investors, or 20%, believe the market will primarily trade sideways.
