Ma Trung, a prominent figure in the Southern Vietnamese film industry, has passed away at the age of 73. He died in the early hours of August 25, 2026, following a battle with illness. The family confirmed that the memorial service took place later that day at their home in An Hoi Tay, Ho Chi Minh City, with the funeral scheduled for the morning of August 28, after which his remains will be cremated at Long Tho Tower in Cu Chi.

Born Ma Van Trung in 1953, Ma Trung began his acting career in the mid-1980s, collaborating with directors such as Le Hoang Hoa and Ly Huynh. One of his earliest roles was as an officer in the film "The Turn of the Card." Throughout the early 1990s, he became known for his performances in historical dramas alongside notable actresses like Viet Trinh, Diem Huong, and Ly Hung. With his piercing gaze and thin mustache, he was often cast in villainous roles, amassing over 100 appearances in both television and film.

Ma Trung once expressed his disappointment at being primarily remembered for his evil characters. He recounted an incident in 2016 when a street vendor mistook him for a criminal due to his on-screen persona, which led to an awkward situation where he had to clarify that he was merely an actor. Despite this, he acknowledged that his roles contributed to his recognition in the industry.

In his personal life, Ma Trung enjoyed a stable marriage with his wife of over 50 years, who he credited as a strong support throughout his artistic journey. His passing has shocked many colleagues, including director Phuong Dien, who was aware of Ma Trung's heart condition for several years. Phuong Dien had considered casting him in a television project but was concerned about his health. He described Ma Trung as a veteran actor who left a significant mark on television during the 1990s and 2000s with his natural and versatile acting style.

Actor Mai Son Lam expressed his disbelief upon hearing the news, as he had spoken with Ma Trung just days prior. He expressed gratitude for the support Ma Trung had given him in his career, including encouraging him to take on the role of Tu Cuong in the film "Why Me." The last time they worked together, Ma Trung had suggested taking a commemorative photo to celebrate their friendship.
