Vietnam Welcomes Record Lottery Winner from South Korea

A South Korean man, referred to as Mr. K, has made headlines in Vietnam after winning a staggering lottery prize of 1,028,800,000 VND (approximately 391,000 USD) in the Power 6/55 lottery. This amount is equivalent to about 57.8 million Korean Won, making it the highest lottery payout for a foreigner in Vietnam's history.

The awarding ceremony took place on July 21, hosted by Vietlott, the state-owned lottery operator in Vietnam. Mr. K is noted to be the fourth foreigner to win the top prize, following two other South Koreans and one Chinese winner in previous draws.

Mr. K's win surpasses the previous record for foreign lottery winners, which was 326 million VND (around 123,000 USD). He has been purchasing lottery tickets regularly for the past four to five years, often buying 20 to 30 tickets twice a week, and up to 50 tickets when the jackpot rolls over.

As per local tax regulations, Mr. K will pay 10% of his winnings, amounting to 102,880,000 VND (approximately 39,100 USD), as personal income tax before receiving the remaining amount. Additionally, he has pledged to donate 15 million VND (around 5,700 USD) to a local charity.

Vietlott, which operates under the Ministry of Finance, has been in business for a decade and has paid out a total of 31 trillion VND in winnings, with 18.34 trillion VND (approximately 6.97 billion USD) coming from the Mega 6/45 and Power 6/55 lotteries alone. To date, there have been 533 winners of the top prize across these two games.

The Power 6/55 lottery requires players to select six numbers from a pool of 55, with odds of winning the top prize at approximately 1 in 28,989,675, making it significantly more challenging than other lottery formats.
