Mother and Son Walk 700 km from Hanoi to Hue

A mother named Ha Phuong and her 13-year-old son, Ha Khoa, have taken on an ambitious journey, walking from Hanoi to Hue over the course of 50 days. This adventure, which began on June 1, covers around 700 kilometers and passes through seven provinces, including Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, and Hue. The idea for this journey emerged after they successfully climbed Fansipan, Vietnam's highest mountain, last September. Inspired by his mother's adventurous spirit, Khoa suggested they walk together the following summer.

Ha Phuong, a 38-year-old teacher, views this journey as an opportunity for her son to learn through real-life experiences. Each area they traverse becomes an open classroom, allowing Khoa to explore local history and culture while interacting with the residents. They set off each day at 5 AM, covering about 20-25 kilometers, often stopping to admire scenic views or converse with locals. The mother and son have faced various weather conditions, adjusting their plans to ensure their safety and comfort.

Throughout their journey, they have encountered remarkable kindness from strangers, who have offered them water, paid for their accommodations, or provided directions. Despite Khoa's initial struggles with the first 200 kilometers, he gradually adapted, making the journey easier as they progressed. The daily expenses for their trip range from 1.5 to 2 million VND, primarily for food and lodging. On favorable weather days, they only need a place to sleep, but during extreme conditions, they rent additional rooms to rest and recover.

Ha Phuong emphasizes that while completing the journey is important, her son's health remains the top priority. If conditions become too harsh, they are prepared to alter their plans. A local resident, Le Dieu Anh, who provides roadside assistance, expressed admiration for the duo's determination, stating that they persist despite challenging weather.

After over 45 days on the road, both mother and son have tanned skin and have gone through two pairs of shoes. They have enjoyed breathtaking views, from coastal paths to blooming lotus fields, and reached the top of Ngang Pass. By mid-July, they had already covered more than 600 kilometers and planned to spend about ten days in Quang Tri to explore historical sites before reaching Hue.

Ha Phuong has observed significant personal growth in her son during this journey. As the youngest in the family, Khoa has learned to take initiative, helping his mother with supplies and encouraging her during tough moments. According to Ha Phuong, the most valuable lessons for Khoa are not about the distance traveled but about caring for others, overcoming challenges, and appreciating simple joys. They aim to complete their journey to Hue in the next 7-10 days, fulfilling a dream that began with a bike ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue in 2025.

Ha Phuong reflects on how walking offers a different experience compared to cycling, allowing her more time to appreciate the scenery and engage with local communities along the way.
