On October 10, the World Health Organization's Emergency Director, Chikwe Ihekweazu, stated that the true scale of the Ebola outbreak in Africa could far exceed official statistics. He highlighted that many infected individuals remain unaccounted for, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Ihekweazu noted that in some regions of the DRC, four out of five new Ebola cases have no known connection to existing patients. This suggests that the actual extent of the outbreak may be two to four times higher than what is currently reported.

Currently, approximately 90% of confirmed Ebola cases are concentrated in Ituri Province, but the outbreak has begun to spread to surrounding provinces. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available.

The ongoing situation calls for heightened awareness and response efforts to manage the outbreak effectively and to ensure that all cases are identified and treated promptly.
