Ensuring Reliable Power Supply for Economic Growth in Dong Nai

Dong Nai, a major industrial hub in the southern region of Vietnam, is focusing on ensuring a reliable electricity supply to support its manufacturing and business activities. As the city accelerates its socio-economic development during the 2026–2030 period, it aims to achieve double-digit economic growth, making a dependable power supply crucial for production and business operations.

Multiple Power Projects Underway

Under the revised eighth National Power Development Plan VIII (PDP VIII), Dong Nai is set to diversify its energy portfolio. This includes developing gas-fired power plants, hydropower, solar power, and waste-to-energy projects. Notably, the Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 gas-fired power plants have already begun commercial operations, while the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project and several other hydropower initiatives are currently under construction.

By 2035, Dong Nai plans to host 47 solar power projects with a combined installed capacity of nearly 9,500 MW. Additionally, five electricity transmission projects have been completed and are operational. Electricity production in Dong Nai is forecasted to reach nearly 25.1 million kWh by 2030, with commercial electricity consumption expected to exceed 24.3 million kWh.

Investment in Infrastructure

To meet the city's new socio-economic development requirements, the Department of Industry and Trade has proposed increased investment in electricity transmission networks and power generation projects during the 2026–2030 period. This includes accelerating the construction schedule for three 220-kV substations and their associated transmission lines to address the rapidly rising electricity demand, especially from newly established industrial parks.

Vu Ngoc Long, Director of the Dong Nai Department of Industry and Trade, emphasized the need for additional investment in the transmission network to prevent grid overloads as electricity demand continues to rise. The city has also urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to revise and supplement solar power projects submitted by investors while enhancing transmission connections in the northern part of Dong Nai City.

Securing Electricity for Sustainable Development

According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Dong Nai's total installed power generation capacity reached nearly 3,600 MW by the end of 2025, which is 52.26% of the capacity target outlined in the revised PDP VIII for 2035, aiming for approximately 6,900 MW. Major power generation facilities in the city include the 400-MW Tri An Hydropower Plant, the 450-MW Nhon Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant, and others.

As Dong Nai accelerates economic development through various investment projects, the demand for electricity from businesses and households is expected to rise sharply. The city has called on the Ministry of Industry and Trade to maximize the output of existing power plants to support its economic growth target.

During a recent meeting, Nguyen Kim Long, Member of the Standing Board of the City Party Committee, urged for close cooperation from the ministry to resolve obstacles affecting ongoing energy projects. He proposed adjusting the investment schedule for electricity supply and transmission projects to align with the city's growth and development goals.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long highlighted Dong Nai's strategic importance to the country's economic development and emphasized the need to accelerate ongoing projects while preparing for future initiatives. The ministry will collaborate with Dong Nai authorities to address challenges and facilitate investments in the city's power infrastructure.

Throughout 2025 and early 2026, the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee has directed the Dong Nai Power Company to ensure a safe, reliable, and uninterrupted electricity supply to support socio-economic development and major events in the region.
