Nguyen Dang Phong, a former judge of the Hanoi People's Court, has been arrested following allegations of misconduct during the handling of a gambling case. The Supreme People's Procuracy has initiated legal proceedings against him, citing serious negligence in his duties, which resulted in a financial discrepancy exceeding 89 billion VND.
The investigation revealed that Phong failed to confiscate illegal gains from the defendants and improperly returned several pieces of evidence, causing substantial damage to the state. His actions have raised concerns about the integrity of the judicial process.
This development is part of a broader investigation by the Supreme People's Procuracy into the case involving Do Ngoc Ha and others charged with organizing and participating in illegal gambling activities. The inquiry uncovered two conflicting investigation conclusions regarding the case, prompting further scrutiny.
In a related matter, Le Thi Hong Nhung, a former prosecutor from the Hanoi People's Procuracy, has also been arrested for allegedly falsifying case documents, which compromised the prosecution's integrity and allowed several gambling actions to go unpunished.
As a result of this ongoing investigation, the Hanoi police have charged eight individuals for their roles in organizing and participating in illegal gambling. The case highlights the need for accountability within the judicial system and emphasizes the importance of upholding legal standards.
