The Ministry of Public Security in Vietnam has initiated a nationwide DNA collection campaign to help

On June 24, 2026, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam held a ceremony to launch a nationwide campaign for collecting DNA samples from the families of martyrs whose identities have not yet been confirmed. This campaign is part of the "500 Days and Nights" initiative aimed at enhancing the search, collection, and identification of martyr remains in anticipation of the 80th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, which will be observed on July 27, 2027.
During the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra presented DNA test results to representatives of the families of three martyrs: Nguyen Thien Quyet from Hai Duong, Doan Van Khai from Ninh Binh, and Nguyen Trong Cat from Thanh Hoa. In her speech, Deputy Prime Minister Tra emphasized the significance of this campaign, noting that over 175,000 martyrs remain unaccounted for and more than 300,000 graves lack adequate information.
"This is a profound concern for the entire political system and the public. The sacred task of identifying martyr remains is not only a historical responsibility but also an urgent matter that must be addressed swiftly, especially as many direct descendants of martyrs are aging and wish to find their loved ones before it is too late," she stated.
Tra highlighted that the identification process requires a systematic and scientific approach, and that the collection of DNA samples from martyrs' families is crucial for expediting the identification efforts. She called for all available resources to be mobilized to ensure that this important task is completed without delay.
Lieutenant General Vu Van Tan, head of the Department of Administrative Management on Social Order, reiterated that the search and identification of martyr remains is a sacred duty of the Party and the State, reflecting the nation's gratitude towards its heroes. The Ministry of Public Security has collaborated with various agencies to analyze and verify DNA samples, successfully identifying 25 martyrs previously without confirmed identities.
Following the launch event, authorities began collecting DNA samples from martyrs' families in Hanoi. Additionally, health care products and medicines were distributed to the families of martyrs during the event.
The DNA collection process involves several steps, including verification of eligibility and the provision of samples at designated locations. Families of martyrs are encouraged to participate in this significant initiative to honor their loved ones and contribute to the historical record.
