Concert Celebrates Legacy of Musician Thanh Tùng

The concert 'Legacy of Love' brought audiences into the world of Thanh Tùng's music, where themes of sadness and solitude are transformed into beautiful melodies about love. The event took place on August 15 at the National Convention Center in Hanoi, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the musician's death, organized by his daughter, journalist Bạch Dương.

Over three hours, the program painted a portrait of Thanh Tùng through songs that have accompanied many generations. Those who worked with him noted that the hallmark of Thanh Tùng's music is sadness without despair. His melodies do not push listeners into hopelessness but evoke a desire for love, closeness to nature, and appreciation for simple things. A spring, a ray of sunshine, a leaf outside the yard, or a guitar can all become memories through his music.

The concert featured nearly 20 performances divided into segments, interspersed with documentary films and interviews, guiding the audience through various emotional landscapes. It opened with a stirring orchestral rendition of 'Love Without Borders,' creating a solemn atmosphere before leading the audience back to familiar tunes. Mỹ Linh gracefully performed 'The Confession of Spring' and 'The Old Path We Return To.' Meanwhile, Tùng Dương revitalized 'The Unresting Heart,' a song originally associated with the duo Mỹ Linh and Bằng Kiều, delivering it with vibrant energy.

In the latter part of the concert, Tùng Dương continued with 'Alone' and 'Yellow Chrysanthemum,' compositions that Thanh Tùng wrote about his late wife, who passed away years before him. Despite being admired by many, the musician never remarried after her death. Through Tùng Dương's voice, the emptiness in these songs was highlighted, emphasizing a sense of loneliness without despair. Lệ Quyên delivered 'The Dew on the Threshold' and 'You and I' with a restrained singing style that matched the emotional depth of Thanh Tùng's music.

Thanh Lam, who had a close relationship with the musician and referred to him as 'teacher,' made a significant impact with 'Purple Flowers Outside the Yard' and 'The Lonely Star.' The performance 'The Legend of Nghi Tàm' showcased a different side of Thanh Tùng, reflecting his finesse in exploring folk influences. This was also his final composition, rich in structure and color. With traditional instruments, Thanh Lam transported the audience to an ancient, theatrical space.

The concert dedicated substantial time to the symphony orchestra and Thanh Tùng's instrumental works. Pieces like 'The Desolate Heart,' 'The Rainy Season,' 'The Turn of the Game,' 'Counting Leaves Outside the Yard,' and 'If I Die, Bury Me with My Guitar' were performed as orchestral arrangements. Under the adaptation of composer Trần Mạnh Hùng and conductor Marc Ramirez, familiar melodies emerged with multiple layers, allowing the audience to appreciate Thanh Tùng not only as a songwriter but also as a composer with sophisticated harmonic and orchestration skills.

'Dew on My Eyelids,' sung by Mỹ Linh and her daughter Mỹ Anh, was one of the emotional highlights towards the end. The two generations sang together in a Thanh Tùng composition, symbolizing the continuity of melodies from decades past that still resonate with today's youth. The concert concluded with 'Singing with the Cicada,' performed by Mỹ Anh and a children's choir, bringing a fresh, innocent vibrancy after the more somber moments. By nearly 11 PM, over 3,000 attendees remained, listening to the heartfelt thanks from the musician's daughter, journalist Bạch Dương. MC Nguyễn Hữu Chiến Thắng closed the event with a poignant remark: 'Thanh Tùng had the ability to transform pain, loss, and loneliness into a universal language of love. After many years, his music remains youthful, captivating audiences, as he turned his own heartaches into the love of everyone.'
