Haiphong container terminal handles one-millionth TEU

HCMC – The Haiphong International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) in the northern port city of Haiphong handled its one-millionth twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) from Maersk Copenhagen container ship yesterday, November 9.

Doan Hai Tuan, chairman of TC-HICT’s Member Council, said the achievement demonstrated the good performance of the northern deep-water ports’ shipping services after roughly five years of operation.

Since being operational in May 2018, TC-HICT of Saigon Newport Corporation has seen remarkable expansion, becoming a key port serving many leading international shipping companies.

The port received the 500,000th TEU in 2020.

According to Tuan, foreign investors might feel confident developing facilities in Haiphong and the neighboring localities inside the northern key economic zone, given that shipments from the port could go direct to the U.S. and European markets instead of stopping at regional terminals on the way.

Late in October, the port welcomed the Singapore-flagged vessel Wan Hai A07, making it the only port in the country’s north capable of handling a ship with a deadweight tonnage of 143,000.

The 750m-long TC-HICT is the biggest deep-water container terminal in northern Vietnam. It now handles 14 weekly service shipments, including six to the U.S., two to India and one to Australia, among others.
