On March 25, the Review Board held a meeting to review the dossier and concluded that the population of 100 Shan Tuyet tea trees in Sin Chai and Hau Chua villages, Sin Chai commune, fully met the criteria of being a Vietnamese heritage tree. Most tea plants grow on high mountains.

In order to be recognized as a Vietnamese heritage tree, the Tua Chua district surveyed and selected 100 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees to measure the height, diameter of the foliage, the circumference of the root, and compile a dossier of requests for recognition.

Tua Chua district has nearly 600 hectares of tea, located at an altitude of about 1,400 m above sea level, covered with clouds all year round. There are more than 4,000 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees, many hundreds of years old, growing naturally in Ta Phin, Sinh Phinh, Ta Sin Thang and Sin Chai communes.

Mr. Grade A Chu’s family, in Hau Chua village, has dozens of ancient tea trees recognized as heritage trees, each year harvesting about 20 kg of dry. To collect, he has to climb a tree 4-10 m high, and pick young buds from 6 am to 11 am.

The heritage tea trees of the households of the Mong ethnic group, so people are still allowed to harvest, but must be associated with conservation work.

From March to the end of October of the lunar calendar, the tea buds are caught in the spring rain, budded, and people choose this time to harvest.

The price per kilogram of ancient tea, if processed from local people, is nearly a million dong, while a purchasing and processing company can raise the price to 10 million dong.

The ancient tea varieties in Tua Chua mainly grow naturally and are cared for completely organically. In the past, indigenous people collected for family use. At present, tea has become a specialty, bringing a stable source of income for people.

The flowers of Shan Tuyet tea have 5 petals, long pistils and larger calyx than normal tea. No care, no use of pesticides, so Shan Tuyet tea is clean, the water is golden yellow, and the taste is sweet and bitter.

The tea trees recognized as heritage trees all have a stem diameter of more than 75 cm and are hundreds of years old.

One corner of the tea tree has the widest canopy, with hundreds of large and small branches, the trunk grows many orchids and mosses.

Locals call this special plant snow tea because the harsh climate of the highland winter makes the whole tree covered with white snow. The tea buds after processing are covered with a thin layer of white chalk, speckled like snow.
