The temple has been serving guests with vegetarian pancakes for more than 20 years

AN GIANG – Since 1999, visitors to Dong Lai Zen Monastery, stopping to rest during their pilgrimage, will be treated to vegetarian pancakes.

Dong Lai Zen Monastery is located in Xuan Phu clump, Tinh Bien town, Tinh Bien district, in That Son land. The Zen Monastery is located at the foot of Cau Mountain and has been serving guests for nearly 23 years with vegetarian pancakes. Starting in 1999, when visitors from all over the world came to pay their respects, the monks thought about treating them with vegetarian pancakes. That tradition continues to this day.

Initially, the monks wanted to let distant guests have something to eat when traveling long distances. After that, the temple’s vegetarian pancakes became known to many people. From a few pans, the temple now has more than 40 cake pans, operating continuously all days of the week, including holidays and Tet, free of charge.

Visitors come to the temple not only for vegetarian pancakes, but also want to witness with their own eyes the scene of pouring 10 pans of pancakes at once. The Buddhists volunteered to stand in the kitchen to pour cakes, surrounded by 10-12 pans of pancakes filled with fire. The cake is poured continuously, diners just need to line up around, the chef will pour the cake into the plate for each person. After taking the cake, visitors move to the restaurant to enjoy.

The ingredients for the pancakes are carefully cared for. Cake crust made of rice flour mixed with coconut water has sweet fat. The filling has whole green beans, tofu, bean sprouts, plus mushrooms and chopped cassava roots. Eating Banh Xeo is indispensable for raw vegetables, a lot of wild vegetables are brought by local people from That Son mountain area. All expenses for making Banh Xeo are contributed by Buddhists from all over the world to maintain operations.

Huu Nhi, 21 years old, a tourist in An Giang shared: “The pancakes here are very delicious, the crust is crispy, the fat is still retained, the filling is rich. The sauce is delicious, the most delicious is probably vegetables, There are many kinds of wild vegetables that I can eat for the first time. There is nothing like eating centipede meat on New Year’s Eve, eating frugal vegetarian pancakes in a peaceful place like this is nothing.”

And Nhat Quang, 20 years old, from Can Tho, said that vegetables and pancakes are plentiful, placed at a separate table in the dining area, decorated on a plate. “The pancakes are very delicious and don’t get bored, feel the taste more special than other places, partly because seeing the scenes of the uncles doing it directly should be more enjoyable,” you said. Because the temple has a lot of people, visitors should be on the lookout for crooks to steal property and carefully preserve their belongings.
