Microsoft Launches $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra with AI Capabilities

Microsoft has unveiled its latest innovation, the Surface Laptop Ultra, which is now available for preorder at a starting price of $2,599. This high-end laptop is equipped with an Nvidia AI chip, enabling users to run extensive artificial intelligence models directly on the device without incurring cloud service fees. The laptop is set to begin shipping on October 16, 2026, as announced by Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's executive vice president of Windows and devices, during a recent event in San Francisco.

One of the standout features of the Surface Laptop Ultra is its magnetic USB-C port, reminiscent of Apple's MagSafe charging connector. In addition to this innovative port, the laptop includes two standard USB-C ports, enhancing connectivity options for users. Microsoft aims to strengthen its position in the AI market as tech giants like Apple and Google also seek to empower users to handle AI workloads locally rather than depending on cloud solutions.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is designed to cater to a variety of AI applications, allowing users to install and execute different models without worrying about escalating monthly costs. This move comes as Microsoft attempts to solidify its status as a key player in the AI landscape, despite facing competition from more established models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

In addition to the laptop, Microsoft has announced that Meta will introduce its Muse AI agent for Windows, which has gained significant popularity in the app market. This collaboration indicates a growing trend towards integrating AI capabilities into consumer devices.

With a 15-inch display and weighing 4.4 pounds, the Surface Laptop Ultra can support up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory and deliver up to one petaflop of computing power. The device's Blackwell RTX Spark GPU boasts processing capabilities comparable to Nvidia's DGX-1 data center server, which previously cost $250 million. This advancement highlights Microsoft's commitment to providing powerful hardware for AI development.

As part of its ongoing evolution in the tech market, Microsoft has been refining its product offerings since it began releasing its own computers in 2012. The introduction of the Surface Laptop Ultra marks a significant step in the company's journey to enhance user experiences with cutting-edge technology.
