Claude Opus 5, Anthropic’s newest Opus model, is now available in GitHub Copilot, enhancing the capabilities of developers using this platform. This model is specifically designed for complex, long-running coding tasks that necessitate careful reasoning, effective tool use, and reliable execution across multiple steps.

In early testing, Claude Opus 5 demonstrated strong performance in agentic coding workflows, which include autonomous code changes, regression verification, and tasks that require coordination of multiple tools. It was particularly effective at making targeted changes, validating its work, and minimizing unnecessary execution overhead on complex tasks.

Moreover, Claude Opus 5 comes with enhanced safeguards aimed at preventing high-harm cyber content. These safeguards may block certain cyber-related or security-adjacent requests. If a request is blocked, users are encouraged to rephrase it with additional benign context or select another available model.

Claude Opus 5 will be accessible to Copilot Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise users. It can be selected in the model picker across various platforms, including Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, GitHub Copilot cloud agent, GitHub Copilot app, GitHub Mobile for iOS and Android, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse. The rollout of this model will be gradual, so users are advised to check back if it is not yet available.
