Despite helping Malaysia maintain a clean sheet and defeating Vietnam at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, coach Tan Cheng Hoe is advised by experts to step aside for a top foreign coach to lead the team. Malaysia finished the tournament in third place, remaining unbeaten with three wins and one draw, notably ending a 12-year winless streak against Vietnam with a 1-0 victory on October 5.

Tan Cheng Hoe, who has been serving as interim coach, expressed his willingness to continue if the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) trusts him. He stated, "As for my position, I leave it to FAM to decide; as long as I am capable, I will give my all for the team." However, many in the Malaysian football community believe that a significant change is needed to elevate the team's performance.

Football expert Zulakbal Abd Karim pointed out, "Cheng Hoe has led the team to an unbeaten record, but we have yet to win any championships. Even with some of the best naturalized players, we have not claimed the ASEAN title." This sentiment reflects a broader concern that Malaysia needs a more transformative approach to compete with stronger teams in the region.

Experts argue that while Tan Cheng Hoe has excelled in understanding player psychology and fostering a family-like team spirit, appointing a top foreign coach is essential for Malaysia to break free from the shadow of stronger regional rivals and make a mark on the continental stage. Analyst Pekan Ramli noted, "Foreign coaches are often given the autonomy to implement their strategies, which could be the key to Malaysia's success in becoming the 'King of ASEAN.'" This perspective highlights the belief that fresh leadership could invigorate the team and enhance their competitive edge.
