Thailand Calls Up 55 Players for FIFA ASEAN Cup, Including Theerathon Bunmathan
Thailand's national football team has announced a preliminary squad of 55 players for the upcoming FIFA

Thailand's national football team recently suffered a 1-2 defeat to the Philippines in their final group stage match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Coach Anthony Hudson expressed disappointment over the loss but emphasized the importance of player rotation in preparation for the upcoming final against Indonesia.
Hudson noted that the team was pleased to secure a spot in the finals after their victory over Vietnam, stating, "We are happy to have qualified for the finals right from our win against Vietnam." He highlighted the significance of defeating a team that had gone 27 matches without a loss, which contributed to their decision to rest several key players in the match against the Philippines.
In this match, Hudson opted to rotate approximately 5-7 players, including key figures like Chanathip Songkrasin and Sarach Yooyen, to ensure they were well-rested for the final. He explained, "The reason we replaced so many players was to ensure that those we will use are in the freshest physical and mental state possible." He acknowledged that if the match had been critical for advancement, it would have posed a different challenge.
The match itself was marred by heavy rain, causing a delay of about an hour and leaving the pitch slippery. The Philippines took the lead early in the third minute, marking the first time Thailand conceded a goal in the tournament. Although Thailand controlled possession, they struggled to create clear chances, with midfield errors hampering their attacks.
Thailand equalized in the 55th minute thanks to a brilliant individual effort from Iklas Sanron. However, shortly after a missed opportunity by Jude Soonsup-Bell, the Philippines regained the lead in the 68th minute through a goal from Kristensen, sealing the victory.
Despite the loss, Thailand remained at the top of Group B and Hudson was optimistic about their chances in the final against Indonesia, which will take place in Jakarta on October 5. He praised Indonesia's strength and noted their impressive performance in the tournament, particularly after a resounding 9-2 victory over Bangladesh in their last match.
Hudson remarked on the significance of the upcoming final, stating, "The atmosphere at the stadium can provide extra motivation for both teams." He expressed confidence in his players' eagerness for the crucial match, while also acknowledging the challenge posed by Indonesia's physically strong and cohesive team.
As Thailand prepares for the final, they will also keep an eye on the third-place match between Vietnam and Malaysia, which will occur on the same day at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
