Thailand Calls Up 55 Players for FIFA ASEAN Cup, Including Theerathon Bunmathan

Thailand's national football team has officially announced a preliminary squad of 55 players in preparation for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Among the notable names included are Theerathon Bunmathan, Chanathip Songkrasin, and Teerasil Dangda, all of whom bring a wealth of experience and skill to the team.

The announcement was made by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and the selection was conducted by head coach Anthony Hudson. This initial list is part of the team's strategy as they gear up for the tournament, which will take place in Indonesia. The final squad will be narrowed down to 23 players before the tournament kicks off.

The inclusion of seasoned players like Bunmathan and Chanathip indicates Hudson's intent to blend experience with emerging talent from the Thai League and international leagues. Chanathip has long been recognized as a key midfielder in Thai football, while Bunmathan is noted for his significant international defensive experience.

Teerasil Dangda, another veteran player, has a storied history with the national team, having faced off against Vietnam in numerous regional competitions. His presence adds depth to an already competitive squad.

However, being named in the preliminary list does not guarantee a spot in the final squad. Coach Hudson faces the challenge of finalizing the team, especially after the withdrawal of players Suphanat Mueanta, Thanawat Suengchitthawon, and Suphanan Bureerat due to injuries. Their absence necessitates careful consideration of the team's composition across all positions.

The FAT plans to finalize the 23-player roster by September 14. The selected players will convene on September 21 in Rangsit before departing for Indonesia.

In the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, Thailand is placed in Group B alongside Vietnam, the Philippines, and Pakistan. A highly anticipated match against Vietnam is scheduled for September 29 at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung. This clash is significant as both teams have a history of fierce competition in regional football.

The tournament format indicates that the top team from Group B will advance to the championship match against the leader of Group A, which includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh. The final is set to take place on October 5 in Indonesia.
