Newcastle United has officially announced the signing of midfielder Nico González from FC Porto. The 24-year-old, who is a product of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, will don the number six shirt for the upcoming season. This transfer marks the seventh senior addition to Newcastle's squad this summer.

Nico González expressed his enthusiasm about joining the club, stating, “I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club. I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I’m really excited to live here and to be part of this project. I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club.” He also reflected on his previous experiences playing at St. James’ Park with Manchester City, highlighting the tough competition and the passionate atmosphere created by the fans.

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle praised González, describing him as a player with “serious quality and elite experience.” He noted that Nico is a strong ball carrier who can drive the team forward while maintaining composure under pressure. Jaissle emphasized that González’s defensive discipline and physicality make him well-suited for the Premier League.

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United's sporting director, added, “We’ve worked patiently on this transfer for a number of weeks. This was the one we wanted, and we’re delighted to welcome Nico to Newcastle United this evening. He was an ambitious target, but following our discussions, he was so keen to join this club.” Wilson highlighted González’s elite experience from playing at major clubs in Europe and his potential for further development.

Nico González began his football journey with Montañeros in his hometown of A Coruña before joining Barcelona’s youth setup at the age of 11. He played for Barcelona B and made his first-team debut during the 2021/22 La Liga season. After a loan spell at Valencia, he made a permanent move to FC Porto in the summer of 2023.
