FIFA Imposes Heavy Sanctions on Argentina After World Cup 2026

FIFA has taken significant action against the Argentina national football team following the controversial events that unfolded during the 2026 World Cup. The governing body of world football has imposed multiple sanctions on several players and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) due to incidents that occurred after the final match.

According to FIFA's findings, players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were involved in a physical altercation with Spanish players after the final whistle. This incident raised serious concerns about player conduct and sportsmanship.

In addition to the altercation, FIFA also investigated the actions of the Argentina team for displaying a banner supporting their claim over the disputed Falkland Islands following their semi-final match. FIFA has a strict policy against political messages in football, which contributed to the severity of the penalties.

As part of the sanctions, midfielder Leandro Paredes has been suspended for 10 matches and fined £66,000 for his role in the post-match brawl. Defender Nahuel Molina received a 7-match suspension and the same fine, while Thiago Almada faces a 1-match ban and a £22,000 fine. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has been suspended for 3 matches and fined £22,000. On the Spanish side, player Gavi has also been handed a 1-match suspension and a £22,000 fine for similar reasons.

The penalties apply only at the national team level and do not affect club play. Furthermore, the AFA has been fined £300,000 for allowing players to display political messages during the tournament. As a result of these sanctions, Argentina's upcoming home matches will be limited to a maximum of 50% capacity.

Currently, Argentina does not have any scheduled matches during the FIFA Days in September. Reports suggest that the AFA is preparing to appeal the suspensions and fines imposed on the players.
