Saudi Arabian football club Al Nassr, home to global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, is grappling with a significant financial crisis, with debts surpassing $213 million. This alarming situation has led the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to impose a transfer ban and restrict the current management's decision-making powers.
According to reports from Al-Riyadiah, the debt primarily stems from poor financial decisions made during the previous season. As a result, Al Nassr is now under close supervision by the Saudi Pro League. To prevent the debt from escalating further, PIF has implemented several emergency measures, notably limiting the decision-making authority of the club's current leadership.
Al Nassr is reportedly unable to sign new players until it demonstrates sufficient financial resources from sponsorship contracts or other revenue streams. The club's financial restructuring plan, outlined by PIF, focuses on three main areas: restricting the financial decision-making powers of current management, hiring independent financial, business, and legal consultants to find solutions for increasing commercial revenue and reducing expenditures, and reviewing ownership structures.
PIF is said to be considering two serious proposals for acquiring Al Nassr, with the preferred option being the sale of a partial stake in the club. The goal of these measures is to protect the club's financial value, brand value, and fan community, while preventing further debt accumulation and enhancing compliance with governance regulations.
These regulations are not only applicable domestically but are also subject to oversight by FIFA and international football organizations for clubs owned by PIF. To ensure fairness among teams under the same ownership, the Saudi national investment fund must allocate financial support equitably and refrain from directly intervening in technical decisions.
The financial crisis has also raised questions about Ronaldo's future at the club. The Portuguese forward has significantly elevated the profile of the Saudi Pro League globally and boosted Al Nassr's commercial value since joining the team at the end of 2022. However, the salary and benefits associated with Ronaldo have made the project surrounding the 41-year-old the most expensive investment in the club's history.
In 2025, Ronaldo signed a two-year contract valued at $676 million, not including additional material benefits. As Al Nassr struggles with over $213 million in debt and is unable to complete new transfer deals, the management will have to weigh the decision of whether to continue maintaining a costly contract with Ronaldo or allocate resources to rebuild the team and improve its financial situation.
Despite Ronaldo's impressive goal-scoring performance and significant contributions to commercial revenue, the decision regarding his future will likely depend not only on sporting factors but also on Al Nassr's ability to navigate its current financial crisis.
Founded in 1955 and based in Riyadh, Al Nassr competes in the Saudi Pro League, the top tier of Saudi football. The club is one of three teams that have never been relegated since the league's inception and has won 11 national championships, the most recent being in the 2025-2026 season. Al Nassr gained global attention after signing Ronaldo, sparking a wave of European stars moving to Saudi Arabia.
