Jorge Jesus Appointed New Coach of Portugal National Team

Jorge Jesus has officially been named the head coach of the Portugal national football team, a decision announced on July 10, 2026. This appointment comes after the departure of Roberto Martínez, who left the position following Portugal's elimination in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

The 71-year-old Portuguese coach has signed a contract that will keep him in charge until the 2030 World Cup. His immediate challenge will be preparing the team for the UEFA Euro 2028, which will be a significant test for his leadership.

Jesus is set to make his debut on September 24, 2026, in a UEFA Nations League match against Wales. According to reports from the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, he will earn an annual salary of 4 million euros, approximately 333,000 euros per month, which is notably less than his previous salary at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he earned 12 million euros annually.

This marks Jorge Jesus's first experience managing a national team in nearly 40 years of coaching. Throughout his career, he has achieved considerable success with clubs such as Benfica, Sporting, and Braga in Portugal. He gained international acclaim while coaching Flamengo in Brazil from 2019 to 2020, during which he led the team to victories in both the Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro.

In recent years, Jesus has also managed Fenerbahçe in Turkey and has had stints in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, the latter being the team of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
