The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin Swapon, stated that the government's expenditure for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is "virtually zero." This is largely due to the revenues generated from advertising, which will cover the necessary expenses associated with broadcasting the event.

Swapon revealed that the broadcasting rights were acquired from FIFA for USD 3.85 million, with the matches being successfully aired through four different media outlets. In a previous arrangement, Bangladesh Television had secured the media rights directly from FIFA for approximately Tk 47 crore, bypassing intermediaries.

While there may be a minor shortfall of around Tk 30 million to Tk 40 million for the entire event, the Minister assured that this would be entirely compensated by advertising revenue. He emphasized that this arrangement indicates a significant improvement in transparency and financial management compared to the previous FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.

Swapon's comments highlight a shift in how broadcasting rights are handled, showcasing the government's commitment to ensuring that public funds are used efficiently.
