Vietnam's national football team wrapped up their training camp in South Korea with an impressive 2-1 victory against Gangwon FC on July 13. This friendly match marked the end of a productive training period where the team faced progressively stronger opponents.
In contrast to their previous matches against Siheung FC and Yongin FC, Gangwon FC, a competitor in the K-League 1, presented a greater challenge. The team had recently drawn with league leaders FC Seoul, indicating their competitive form. Head Coach Kim Sang-sik fielded a strong lineup featuring key players such as Quang Hải, Hoàng Đức, and the Brazilian trio of Xuân Son, Tài Lộc, and Hoàng Hên.
Despite the formidable opponent, Vietnam started the match with an aggressive approach, creating several dangerous opportunities. However, they faced an early setback when they conceded a penalty in the 14th minute due to a defensive error. Nevertheless, the team quickly regrouped and responded effectively. After Quang Hải hit the crossbar, Tài Lộc set up Xuân Son, who scored the equalizer in the 28th minute.
Throughout the match, Coach Kim maintained a consistent lineup until the 60th minute, allowing the players to build momentum. The tactical adjustments proved beneficial as Nguyễn Ngọc Mỹ made a beautiful shot that forced the Gangwon FC goalkeeper into action. Shortly after, a well-executed play from Văn Đô led to Phạm Gia Hưng scoring the decisive goal, sealing the victory at 2-1.
This successful training camp, marked by three consecutive wins, has given the coaching staff ample opportunity to evaluate player performances and refine strategies. The team will return to Hanoi before heading to Thái Nguyên for a final friendly match against Myanmar on July 18, which will serve as a crucial preparation ahead of the ASEAN Cup 2026.
The ASEAN Cup 2026 is set to take place from July 24 to August 26, where the defending champions Vietnam will compete in Group A alongside Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, and Timor Leste. Vietnam's opening match will be against Timor Leste, who have chosen Chonburi, Thailand, as their home ground due to insufficient local facilities.
