Uruguay Substitutes Goalkeeper Muslera After Mistake Against Spain
Uruguay's goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at halftime during their World Cup match against Spain

In a significant development for Uruguayan football, Diego Forlán has been named the interim coach of the national team, the 'Celeste', after the abrupt exit of Marcelo Bielsa. The decision follows a disappointing performance by Uruguay in the group stages of the 2026 World Cup, leading the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) to seek a quick change in leadership.
Forlán, a legendary figure in Uruguayan football, is well-known for his achievements, including winning the Copa América in 2011 and receiving the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup. His appointment was confirmed by AUF president Ignacio Alonso during an interview with Teledoce, where he stated, "If an agreement is reached with Diego Forlán in the coming hours, he will be the coach for the U-20 team and the upcoming friendly matches. He is excited, although there are still some details to finalize."
Despite Forlán's illustrious playing career, his coaching experience is limited. His previous roles include a brief stint with Peñarol in 2019 and a short period at the helm of Atenas de San Carlos in Uruguay's second division. Nevertheless, the AUF is optimistic about his potential to lead the team through a transitional phase that is expected to last until March 2027.
During this time, Forlán will have dual responsibilities: managing the senior national team in scheduled friendlies in September and leading the U-20 team in their quest to qualify for the World Cup next year. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as the team seeks to rebuild its morale and cohesion after Bielsa's tenure, which was marred by internal conflicts and poor results.
The AUF hopes that Forlán's leadership will not only improve the team's performance on the pitch but also foster a more harmonious environment within the squad, which faced significant challenges under the previous coach.
