Colombia Falls to Switzerland in Penalty Shootout

In the early hours of July 8 (Vietnam time), Colombia faced Switzerland in a gripping knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match ended in a dramatic penalty shootout after both teams failed to score during regular and extra time.

Colombia, regarded as one of the strongest teams in the tournament, started with clear offensive intentions. The duo of Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias consistently challenged the Swiss defense, particularly exploiting the left flank. Despite Colombia's aggressive play and a slight possession advantage of 51% to 49%, they could not find the back of the net. Switzerland, on the other hand, relied on the pace of Denis Zakaria and Dan Ndoye to create opportunities.

Throughout the first half, Colombia generated more chances, including a notable shot from Luis Díaz that required a superb save from Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Colombia's Camilo Vargas also had a solid performance, but the first half ended without any goals.

The second half mirrored the first, with both teams remaining locked in a stalemate. As the match progressed into extra time, Colombia continued to press for a goal but was thwarted by Kobel's exceptional goalkeeping. With the score still 0-0 after 120 minutes, the match was decided by penalties.

In the penalty shootout, Davinson Sánchez struck the crossbar, and despite a valiant effort, Colombia lost 4-3 to Switzerland. This defeat means Colombia will not advance to the quarter-finals, while Switzerland will face Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in the next round.

The upcoming match against Argentina is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on July 12 (Vietnam time).
