World Cup Standings: Canada Advances, Qatar Eliminated
The final matches of Group B in the 2026 World Cup have concluded, with Canada advancing but facing

The 2026 World Cup has marked a significant milestone as all three host nations—Canada, the USA, and Mexico—have successfully advanced to the knockout stage. This unprecedented achievement comes after Canada's final group match against Switzerland, where they faced a 1-2 defeat but still managed to secure a spot in the next round.
Before the last round of matches, both Mexico and the USA had already clinched their places in the knockout stage, with both teams guaranteed to finish at the top of their respective groups. The attention turned to Vancouver, where Canada was competing against Switzerland for the top position in Group B.
Canada entered the match with the advantage of leading the group and only needed a draw to maintain their position. Coach Jesse Marsch had set the goal of finishing at the top since taking over the national team, and the prospect seemed achievable as the first half ended without any goals.
However, the second half saw Switzerland take control. Just 39 seconds into the half, Johan Manzambi crossed from the right, allowing Ruben Vargas to score the opening goal for Switzerland. This goal became the fastest scored after halftime in World Cup history since Daniel Agger's own goal in 2010.
Things worsened for Canada in the 57th minute when Breel Embolo broke free from the offside trap and assisted Manzambi, who scored Switzerland's second goal. Despite being down 0-2, Canada rallied back in the 76th minute when Nathan Saliba set up Promise David for a stunning volley, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
This goal showcased Canada's ability to score from substitutes, as they became one of the teams with the most goals from bench players in the tournament, alongside Switzerland and Germany. Nonetheless, Canada's loss meant they relinquished the top spot to Switzerland but still achieved their primary goal of advancing to the knockout stage as the second-placed team in Group B.
Canada will face the runner-up from Group A, likely South Korea, in the Round of 16 on June 28 in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, in a parallel match in Seattle, Bosnia & Herzegovina defeated Qatar, securing their own hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Despite Qatar's efforts, they ended the tournament with just one point and were eliminated, marking them as the second Asian team to exit after Jordan, who were the defending champions and runners-up at the Asian Cup.
