Leicester City beat Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday (Jan 19) to go top of the Premier League, for 24 hours at least, thanks to goals from Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison.


Leicester have 38 points from 19 games but Manchester United, on 37 points, can return to the top with a victory at Fulham on Wednesday. Chelsea's third defeat in five matches dropped them to eighth place, nine points behind the leaders.

* Premier League Southampton beat third-tier Shrewsbury Town 2-0 in their FA Cup third round tie on Tuesday thanks to goals from Dan N'Lundulu and James Ward-Prowse. The victory means the Saints will face Arsenal at home in the fourth round on Saturday.

* Moussa Diaby scored one goal and set up the winner for Florian Wirtz as Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Tuesday to move into second place in the Bundesliga and snap a four-game winless run this year. Dortmund are fourth on 29 points and will be 10 behind leaders Bayern Munich if the champions beat Augsburg on Wednesday.

* superb goal by Michail Antonio helped West Ham United to a 2-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday after visiting midfielder Matheus Pereira had cancelled out Jarrod Bowen's opener in a lively contest. The result lifted West Ham two places up to seventh on 32 points from 19 games while the Baggies stayed 19th on 11 points with an uphill task of avoiding relegation after their three-match unbeaten away run ended.

* Belgium’s Beerschot named 28-year-old Englishman Will Still as their new head coach on Tuesday and the top-flight club said he was the youngest in Belgian football since World War Two. Still replaces Hernan Losada, who left to join DC United in Major League Soccer, and will take charge of his first match on Wednesday against Eupen.

* Borussia Moenchengladbach edged past Werder Bremen 1-0 thanks to defender Nico Elvedi's second-half header on Tuesday, their third win in four league matches this year that lifted them to sixth in the Bundesliga.

* Women are poised to return to the Indianapolis 500 starting grid this year with a female-led ownership group and driver that could herald a new era in IndyCar racing, Indianapolis Motor Speedway said on Tuesday. Paretta Autosport will be spearheaded by automotive and motorsport executive Beth Paretta with 2010 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Simona De Silvestro back in the cockpit for what is billed as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

* Two more Australian Open players have tested positive for COVID-19, government officials said on Wednesday, as authorities were at cross-purposes over who would pay for the tournament's quarantine bill. Victoria state police minister Lisa Neville said two players and a non-playing Australian Open participant comprised three new infections reported on Wednesday. A total of 10 people associated with the Grand Slam, including four players, have now tested positive for the virus.

* Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth has been withdrawn from the Thailand Open after testing positive for COVID-19, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said on Tuesday. BWF said world number 13 Sai Praneeth returned a positive result on Monday and will be in hospital for at least 10 days.

* European champions Bayern Munich will meet either Qatar's Al Duhail or Egyptian side Al Ahly in the semi-finals of FIFA's Club World Cup, after Tuesday's draw in Zurich. Al Duhail and Al Ahly face each other in match three of the competition, which will be staged on Feb. 4.

* Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is still unavailable because he is isolating after coming into close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and manager Pep Guardiola does not know when the Argentine will return. Aguero was expected to start in City's FA Cup third-round tie at home to Birmingham City on Jan. 10 but did not feature in the matchday squad as they won 3-0.

* Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has escaped a lengthy ban for lashing out at Athletic Bilbao's Asier Villalibre in Sunday's (Jan 17) Spanish Super Cup final defeat and will only serve a two-game suspension. The Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) said on Tuesday Messi had been banned for two matches, meaning he will miss Thursday's Copa del Rey last-32 tie at Cornella and Sunday's La Liga match away to Elche. He is set to return to face Bilbao in the league on Jan 29.

* Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said he is not to blame for Luka Jovic failing to succeed at the club after the Serbian striker scored as many goals in his first game with Eintracht Frankfurt as he managed in 18 months in the Spanish capital.

* The future of versatile defender David Alaba at Champions league winners Bayern Munich remains unclear, coach Hansi Flick said on Tuesday, with the Austrian linked with a move to Spain or England. Alaba's likely departure has been an issue for many months now, with the 28-year-old's contract with the German champions running out at the end of the season.

* Torino have sacked manager Marco Giampaolo after a run of one win in their last 12 Serie A games and appointed Davide Nicola as his replacement, the Turin club announced on Tuesday. Torino sit 18th in the standings after their poor start to the season, with former AC Milan boss Giampaolo lasting less than six months as coach.

* Norwegian Hege Riise is to take over as interim coach of the England women's team after Phil Neville stood down to take over at Inter Miami men, Sky Sports said on Tuesday. Should Riise be confirmed as England coach, the move would bring one of the great pioneers of the game to the Lionesses.

* AC Milan have signed veteran Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic on a free transfer until the end of the season, with an option to extend the contract for a further year, the Serie A club confirmed on Tuesday. Mandzukic has been without a club since last summer when his contract at Qatar's Al-Duhail was terminated by mutual consent. He scored one goal in seven appearances in the Middle East.

* Portuguese soccer club Benfica reported a mass COVID-19 outbreak on Tuesday, announcing that 17 people from their playing squad, coaching staff and general staff had tested positive.

* Israeli driver Roy Nissany will have a day of pre-season testing and take part in three Friday practice sessions for Williams this season, the struggling Formula One team said on Tuesday. Nissany, 26, ended up 19th in Formula Two last year after finishing 22nd in 2019 but Williams, who changed ownership last August, said he would continue in the role of official test driver.

* German playmaker Mesut Ozil must be desperate to play football again and can thrive in a welcoming environment at Turkish club Fenerbahce, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said. Ozil travelled to Turkey on Sunday to complete his move to Fenerbahce after saying goodbye to his Arsenal team mates at the club's training ground.
