Teacher's Heartbreak as Only 3 Students Attend Class

The new school year at Quynh Tam Primary School in Nghe An has entered its fifth week, yet many students from the remote Tien Son point have yet to return to class. Teachers are feeling the weight of empty desks and the absence of their students, which has caused significant concern and sadness.

Le Thi Cuc, the homeroom teacher of class 5M, expressed her worries, particularly for her students who are in their final year of primary school and preparing to transition to secondary education. The curriculum for the fifth grade includes many new topics that require regular attendance and direct guidance from teachers. "The new fifth-grade program has many changes. Without direct instruction from teachers, relying solely on self-study or parental assistance at home can be very challenging. Each day, as I walk into class and see the empty seats, I feel a deep sense of concern," she shared.

Despite the challenges, many students have expressed a desire to return to school to reunite with their teachers and friends. However, as the fifth week of the school year progresses, many remain absent. On October 5, only three out of 21 students in class 4L attended school, which has raised alarms among the teaching staff.

Nguyen Thi Dinh, the homeroom teacher of class 4L, reported that efforts to encourage parents to send their children back to school had been underway since before the school year began. Due to the scattered living situations of the students, teachers have been reaching out to families individually to promote school attendance. Unfortunately, some parents have even left communication groups set up by the teachers on Zalo, a messaging app. While teachers are welcomed when they visit homes, there has been little change in the students' attendance.

Among the three students who did attend class, one comes from a particularly difficult background. This student lost their mother at a young age and lives with their grandmother. The school has provided support for this student, including assistance with meals, transportation, insurance, and school supplies to ensure they can continue their education.

In class 2M, taught by Bui Thi My Loi, only six out of 37 students have returned, leading to rows of empty desks in the classroom. Maintaining a regular learning routine and reinforcing basic skills are crucial for these young learners. Each day, the teacher engages with the six students present while hoping for the return of their classmates.

The growing knowledge gap between students who attend and those who do not is a significant concern for teachers. The restructuring of the Tien Son school point has contributed to the reluctance of many parents to send their children back to school. Local government officials and relevant departments have engaged in discussions to address concerns regarding school arrangements and transportation solutions for students.
