Tax Authority Aims to Streamline Tax Code Cancellation Process

The Tax Authority of Vietnam has announced a significant reduction in the time required to cancel tax codes, aiming to complete the process within three working days if all necessary documentation is provided and tax obligations are fulfilled. This initiative is part of a larger campaign launched in July, titled 'Cleaning Up Tax Codes - Removing Business Obstacles,' which seeks to review and standardize the operational status of tax codes managed by the authority.

Nguyen Thi Thu, Head of Tax Operations at the Tax Authority, stated that while the review of tax codes is a routine task, the recent push is in response to Resolution No. 57, which calls for the standardization of data to ensure it is accurate, complete, clean, and active. This standardization is essential for connecting and sharing information with the national population database and facilitating digital transformation.

Over the past eight months, approximately 95,000 tax codes have been cleaned, with more than 3,000 codes restored to allow businesses to resume operations. Nguyen Thi Thu emphasized that this campaign not only aims to deactivate inactive tax codes but also actively supports businesses that genuinely wish to restart their production and trading activities. The successful reactivation of over 3,000 businesses is expected to positively contribute to the national budget.

Furthermore, the Tax Authority is committed to ensuring fairness among taxpayers by requiring all businesses to meet their financial obligations to the state budget when either canceling or restoring their tax codes. This approach aims to maintain equity between compliant taxpayers and those currently operating.

As businesses return to activity, they must adhere to their financial responsibilities as stipulated by law. The Tax Authority has recognized various challenges faced by businesses, particularly those that have been inactive for years and are now encountering issues related to late declaration penalties. In response, the authority is actively compiling these concerns and proposing solutions to facilitate a smoother process for businesses to fulfill their obligations.

Nguyen Thi Thu expressed hope that the proposed solutions would enable businesses to complete their procedures quickly, allowing them to confidently open new ventures or resume operations with peace of mind regarding their legal status. This objective aligns with the overarching goals of the campaign and the ongoing efforts to support the business community.
