A Singapore court has imposed a fine of S$600 (approximately $465) on Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, a 19-year-old French student, for a viral stunt that involved licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine and then returning it to the dispenser.

Maximilien, who is studying in Singapore, pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance. His act, which he shared on Instagram with the caption "city is not safe," drew widespread disgust from the public after it was reposted on various community pages and picked up by local news outlets.

The vending machine's owner, iJooz, responded to the incident by replacing all 500 straws in the machine's dispenser to ensure public safety. Public nuisance laws in Singapore are strict, with offenders facing fines up to S$2,000, three months in jail, or both.

In court, both the prosecution and defense agreed on the need for a fine. Maximilien expressed remorse through his lawyer, stating he was "truly sorry for having caused all this trouble" and acknowledged that what he thought was a playful act had serious consequences.

The incident occurred on March 12 at an iJooz vending machine located in Goldhill Centre, a well-off area in Singapore, shortly after Maximilien had completed a boxing workout. The vending machines, which sell freshly squeezed orange juice for S$2 per cup, are commonly found in shopping districts, train stations, and residential blocks across the city-state.
