Miss Universe 2024 First Runner-Up Arrested in South Africa

Chidimma Adetshina, the First Runner-Up of Miss Universe 2024, has been detained in South Africa due to allegations of illegal residency and falsifying her nationality to gain entry into the country. The Nigerian beauty queen is currently facing deportation as South African authorities expedite legal procedures against her.

Adetshina, who was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a mother from Mozambique, was arrested alongside her three-year-old son in Cape Town. Reports indicate that she attempted to deceive security at the Lebombo border crossing with Mozambique to re-enter South Africa after being placed on a government watchlist in late 2024.

On June 9, 2026, Adetshina appeared in the Cape Town Regional Court, where she was granted bail under strict conditions, including house arrest. She is required to report any changes in her living situation, employment, or travel plans to authorities while awaiting her next court appearance scheduled for July.

The situation has drawn significant media attention, especially given the legal troubles faced by her family. In 2025, her mother, Anabela Rungo, was also arrested in South Africa for identity theft, which had resulted in the revocation of her legal residency documents.

Adetshina's rise to fame began when she won the title of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, despite facing backlash regarding her heritage during the Miss South Africa pageant. After her victory, she made history by becoming the first Nigerian to secure the First Runner-Up position in the Miss Universe competition held in Mexico.

Despite her achievements, Adetshina's life has been fraught with instability. She has struggled to adapt to life in Nigeria, away from her family and in an unfamiliar environment. Her desire to reunite with her mother and care for her son motivated her to attempt illegal border crossing, leading to her current legal predicament.
