HCMC – Four broken undersea Internet cable lines will return to normal operation by the end of this month, while the fifth line is expected to be fixed next month.

Two of the four cable lines — IA and SMW3 — were fully fixed on May 3 and are now functioning normally. Two other lines, AAE-1 and AAG, are expected to be done by the end of May.

The repair of cable line APG might be completed next month, according to a report from the internet service providers.

The five undersea cables linked to Vietnam went down at the end of last year, slowing Vietnam’s Internet connections with international networks.

The Ministry of Information and Communications told domestic companies to work with international firms to fix those cables as soon as possible.

Vietnam is currently connected to international networks via five international undersea cable systems: APG, AAG, AAE-1, IA, and SMW-3, with a total capacity of 18.7 Tbps.

Recently, Viettel Group announced that it would operate the ADC undersea cable line by the end of this year, while VNPT will participate in the operation of the SJC2 cable network.

At its shareholders meeting in late April, FPT Telecom approved a plan to develop the ALC undersea cable project with other international Internet service providers.

Vietnam is expected to operate an additional four to six undersea cables by 2030.
