The recently released 15-minute gameplay footage of Black Myth: Zhong Kui has become a focal point of discussion within the gaming community. While the game impresses with its stunning visuals, monster designs, and combat system, it has also drawn criticism for featuring several animations that closely resemble those from Black Myth: Wukong.
One of the most notable similarities is the protagonist's drinking pose, which many players have likened to that of the character known as Thiên Mệnh Nhân from Wukong. This resemblance has led to questions about whether Game Science, the developer behind both titles, is intentionally maintaining the signature elements of the previous game or simply reusing existing animations.
This is not the first time players have noticed parallels between Zhong Kui and Wukong. From character movements to combat actions and certain interactive animations, the new game appears to carry a strong influence from its predecessor. However, labeling this as outright imitation may be an exaggeration. Both games are developed by Game Science and belong to the same franchise, making it reasonable for them to share some technologies, animations, or design styles. Furthermore, the development team may significantly adjust these familiar actions before the official release.
Despite the animation debate, Black Myth: Zhong Kui continues to impress with its gameplay. The demo showcases various real-time battles, defensive maneuvers, evasions, and the use of magical abilities, along with a summoning system. The boss battles also indicate that Game Science is expanding upon the successful combat formula established in Wukong.
The visuals are another highlight, featuring a richly detailed environment, a dark atmosphere, and creatures steeped in Eastern mythology. Game Science has confirmed that the gameplay footage is recorded from a developing version of the game, meaning many details are subject to change. Nevertheless, the direction Zhong Kui is taking seems to align closely with the familiar formula of Wukong, rather than completely distancing itself from its predecessor's legacy.
For some fans, the fact that Zhong Kui retains these familiar movements from Thiên Mệnh Nhân may not be a cause for concern. On the contrary, it could signify that the essence of Black Myth is still very much alive in this new installment.
