Trà Giang, a celebrated People's Artist in Vietnam, is known not only for her beauty but also for her profound contributions to Vietnamese cinema. Born in 1942 in Phan Thiết, she grew up in a family with a rich artistic tradition. Her father, Nguyễn Văn Khánh, was a notable artist himself. Trà Giang's career took off after she graduated from Vietnam's first film school, where she showcased her exceptional talent and elegance.
Throughout her career, Trà Giang starred in numerous classic films that depicted the resilience and spirit of Vietnamese women during wartime. Her performances in films such as “The 17th Parallel: Day and Night,” “Hanoi Child,” and “Sister Tu Hau” left a lasting impression on audiences. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the arts, she was awarded the title of People's Artist in 1984, becoming one of the first five artists to receive this honor.
Trà Giang's international acclaim includes a Silver Medal at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1963 for “Sister Tu Hau” and a Best Actress award in 1973 for her role in “The 17th Parallel: Day and Night.” Despite her fame, she has always maintained a private life, marked by a deep love for her late husband, Nguyễn Bích Ngọc, a talented musician and educator.
The couple married in 1967 and had a daughter, Nguyễn Bích Trà, who pursued a successful career in music abroad. Tragically, Trà Giang lost her husband in 1999, an event that profoundly affected her. Since then, she has chosen to live alone, dedicating her life to honoring his memory.
Now in her late 80s, Trà Giang resides in a quiet apartment in Ho Chi Minh City, where she has turned to painting as a form of therapy and self-expression. Her home is filled with her artwork, showcasing her journey into this new passion. Despite being separated from her daughter, the two maintain a close relationship, often connecting through calls and visits.
Trà Giang finds joy in her simple life, surrounded by art and the memories of her past. She values her health, mental clarity, and the friendships she has cultivated over the years. For her, happiness in her twilight years comes from a peaceful existence, reflecting on a life well-lived and the love she has shared.
