Bitcoin Price Update: Whales Stir After 16 Years of Dormancy

As of September 7, 2026, Bitcoin is trading around $79,923, showing a slight decrease of 0.06% compared to the previous day. Earlier in the morning, Bitcoin briefly surged from $79,600 to $80,500 before correcting back to $79,900. The overall cryptocurrency market capitalization has increased by 0.16%, reaching approximately $2.71 trillion. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has regained the $2,500 mark, rising by 0.3% in the past 24 hours, while BNB and XRP have seen declines of 1.39% and 0.53%, respectively.

A significant development in the cryptocurrency community is the awakening of Bitcoin 'whales' from the era of Satoshi Nakamoto. The term 'whale' refers to addresses holding more than 1,000 Bitcoins. These wallets, created before Nakamoto's disappearance from the community in April 2011, are often referred to as 'Satoshi era wallets' or 'ancient whales.' According to data tracked by Cointelegraph, a series of addresses holding a total of 600 BTC, valued at around $48 million, moved their assets on September 5, 2026, after being inactive for over 16 years.

Whale Alert, a platform that monitors blockchain transactions, reported that the 600 BTC originated from mining rewards across 12 Bitcoin blocks. However, they noted that their research found no connection between these transactions and Satoshi Nakamoto, the presumed creator of Bitcoin. "Based on our research, none of the blocks associated with the 600 BTC that just awakened can be linked to Satoshi," a Whale Alert spokesperson stated.

This revelation reduces speculation surrounding the origins of the tokens mined by Bitcoin miners in the past. Whale Alert also traced the origins of the 12 mining rewards from blocks mined in March 2010, when the reward for each block was 50 BTC. This reward is halved every Bitcoin Halving cycle, with the most recent occurring in April 2024, reducing the reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per successfully mined block.

Any activity from wallets associated with the Satoshi Nakamoto era captures significant attention from the community, as it may provide clues to one of the most enduring mysteries in modern technology: the identity of Bitcoin's creator. However, Whale Alert's findings indicate that the identity of the individual believed to be Satoshi Nakamoto remains elusive. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 6, Whale Alert mentioned that seven block rewards of 'ancient' origin were examined and concluded not to be mined by Bitcoin's creator.

Additionally, Lookonchain, a platform for analyzing on-chain data, initially identified seven wallets belonging to miners that transferred 350 BTC after 16.5 years of inactivity. This group concluded that these wallets earned their rewards through mining activities in March 2010. The Satoshi era does not imply that these Bitcoins belong to Satoshi himself, but rather highlights that coins from Nakamoto's period are still actively participating in the market.

The creator of Bitcoin was involved in its development and communication regarding the project until 2010, before gradually withdrawing from the project, with the last known contact occurring in April 2011.
