Best fruit specialties of northern provinces in Viet Nam

Northern Viet Nam has a tropical monsoon climate with 4 distinct seasons and all year round fruits. Therefore, northern Viet Nam is famous for specially tasty fruits, namely, Hung Yen longan, Sapa peach,.. Let’s find out fruit specialties in northern provinces of Viet Nam in this post.

Hung Yen longan (Nhan long Hung Yen)

 Longan has long been a symbol of Hung Yen Province - a province in the Red River Delta in the north side. Not only being a symbol, longan is also a pride of Hung Yen’s local residents. Although there are many longan areas all over Viet Nam, only longan in Hung Yen offers a special taste which nowhere else can (planted in specific soil as well as the right climate).

In ancient times, this fruit was only enjoyed by mighty kings.

Thanh Ha lychee (Vai Thanh Ha - Hai Duong)

 In mid-year (May to June), nearly everyone is attracted and impressed by red lychees from Thanh Ha - Hai Duong. Thanh Ha lychee has thin skin, small seed and thick flesh and extremely sweet taste, therefore, this fruit has become widely known and Thanh Ha - Hai Duong is in its prime when it comes to lychee seasons.

Huong Son apricot (mo Huong Son - Ha Noi)

 Last days of winter are the time when apricot flowers blossom. In spring, the fruits start to grow and are ready to be harvested by March. The apricot seasons coincide with Huong Pagoda Festivals, therefore, visitors stand a chance of marveling at the beauty of apricots as well as their equally sweet and sour taste.

Ngu banana (chuoi Ngu Dai Hoang - Ha Nam)

 Ngu bananas are planted in Dai Hoang Village, Hoa Hau Commune, Ly Nhan District, Ha Nam Province (previously called Ly Nhan). Dai Hoang local residents recorded that Tran King and his servants visited Ly Nhan and tasted this local fruit. Impressed by the palatable taste, the king rewarded people there and commanded them to plant a massive number of seeds. Since then, Dai Hoang bananas were called Ngu bananas (also known as Chuoi tien vua) - which are of high quality to serve the kings.

Dong Banh custard apple (na Dong Banh - Lang Son)

 Custard apple seasons occur in the first days of August. This fruit is famous for its pleasant aroma and tasty flavour. When it comes to custard apples, Dong Banh custard apples are the most wellknown ones. They are planted on high stone hills so local residents devised pulleys to harvest easier. Thus, many people call custard apples “the flying fruits”

Annually, Dong Banh custard apples are always craved for on account of their premium quality.

Due to special requirements, annual crops are insufficient to meet the demands. 

Ha Giang orange (cam Ha Giang)

 There are numerous provinces planting oranges but Ha Giang’s oranges outclass others. Ha Giang oranges have made a name for themselves because of their big sizes, extremely orange skins with brown dots. This fruit has a beautiful color, delicious flavour and pleasant scent.

Doan Hung pomelo (buoi Doan Hung - Phu Tho)

 While the South has famous Nam Roi pomelo, the North is wellknown for Doan Hung pomelo. Doan Hung pomelos are in beautiful circle shapes and have withered yellow skins. When they are ripe, they exude pleasant scents. The plus point making this fruit distinct from Thanh Tra pomelo or Nam Roi pomelo is its small flesh as well as long durability. 

Bac Ha plum (man Bac Ha - Lao Cai)

 This fruit is also known as Ha Noi plum. Bac Ha plum is one of the most favoured fruits in northern Viet Nam. When they are ripe, they turn crimson and their taste is a decent mixture of sweet and sour. In plum seasons, tourists from around Viet Nam come there to enjoy this fruit. 

Cao Phong orange (cam Cao Phong - Hoa Binh)

 Cao Phong oranges made a name for themselves for their supreme quality. Along with Ha Giang oranges, Cao Phong oranges are among the most favoured oranges in Viet Nam. When they are ripe, they are palatable and exude distinct pleasant scents.

Yen Chau mango (xoai Yen Chau - Son La)

 Yen Chau mango is a local species which was planted a very long time ago. This fruit has a small circle shape, green skin with brown dots. Ripe mangoes have thick skins, tasty orange flesh. Local people call this fruit “egg mango” to differ from other mangoes.
