Vietnam's U17 Team Prepares for World Cup Debut in Qatar

The U17 Vietnam football team is gearing up for its first-ever appearance at the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026, which will take place in Qatar from November 20 to December 13. This significant milestone comes after the team's impressive performance in the U17 Asian Championship, where they topped Group C, defeating Yemen and the UAE.

Under the guidance of coach Cristiano Roland, the team has been training intensively since September 20, focusing on both skill development and mental preparation. The squad includes 29 players, featuring key figures from previous tournaments alongside seven new talents, allowing for a broader selection and competitive spirit.

Vietnam is placed in Group G, facing formidable opponents including Belgium, New Zealand, and Mali. The opening match against Belgium is scheduled for November 20 at 20:00, followed by a match against New Zealand on November 23 at 22:30, and concluding the group stage against Mali on November 26 at 20:00.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has made significant investments in youth football, establishing a professional U16 league to ensure a strong foundation for future generations. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and competitive experience of young players, addressing the challenges they face on the international stage.

As excitement builds among fans, there is anticipation regarding the broadcast rights for the tournament in Vietnam. Reports indicate that at least two to three media companies are in discussions to secure these rights, although negotiations may be challenging due to the high costs involved.

Coach Roland emphasizes the importance of instilling confidence in his players, preparing them not just tactically but also mentally to face top-tier opponents. This World Cup opportunity is seen as a catalyst for the professionalization of youth football in Vietnam, aiming to cultivate a sustainable pool of talent for the national team.
