Trần Trung Kiên Faces Potential Exclusion from Vietnam National Team
Goalkeeper Trần Trung Kiên, standing at 1.91 meters tall, may be excluded from the Vietnam national football

Doan Van Hau, a prominent defender for the Vietnam national football team, has been unexpectedly excluded from the squad for the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Coach Kim Sang Sik revealed the list of 23 players, and the absence of Van Hau has sparked significant interest and speculation among fans and analysts.
In comparison to the team that successfully defended their ASEAN Cup title, the current roster features several changes, particularly in the defense. Alongside Van Hau, goalkeeper Dang Van Lam and defenders Nguyen Van Vi and Dinh Quang Kiet are also missing from the lineup. In the attacking front, Nguyen Tran Viet Cuong was not called up, and Nguyen Ngoc My is absent due to his participation with the U23 Vietnam team at the 2026 Asian Games.
The decision to omit Van Hau has raised questions regarding the reasons behind his exclusion. While he is known for his aggressive playing style, his recent performances have not stood out. During the ASEAN Cup 2026, Van Hau, who plays for Hanoi Police FC, was a regular starter but failed to make a significant impact, with most of the team's attacking plays directed towards the right flank, where teammate Tien Anh excelled.
Coach Kim Sang Sik has opted for new talent, including Vietnamese expatriates Adou Minh and Williams Minh Hoang. Adou Minh, born in 1997, plays as a right-sided center-back for Hanoi Police FC, while 16-year-old Williams Minh Hoang, who stands at 1.90 meters, plays as a forward for Ho Chi Minh City Police FC. If Adou Minh is selected to start, Xuân Mạnh may take Van Hau's left center-back position.
Additionally, the coach has recalled left winger Cao Quang Vinh, further diminishing Van Hau's chances of being included in the squad. Even as a backup option, Van Hau was overlooked in favor of players such as Nhat Minh and Phan Tuan Tai.
Beyond tactical reasons, there are concerns regarding Van Hau's aggressive style of play. He faced disciplinary action earlier this season in the V-League after a dangerous tackle that resulted in a four-match suspension. While Coach Kim has not entirely closed the door on Van Hau's return, it is evident that the player must demonstrate improved performance and control in his gameplay to regain his spot in the national team.
