Bangladesh's national football team has officially agreed to replace India in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in Indonesia from September 24 to October 4. India withdrew from the tournament to prepare for a friendly match against Brazil on October 3, prompting the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to accept the invitation to participate.

The decision was made during a meeting of the National Team Committee (NTC) of the BFF on August 14. Bangladesh, currently ranked 181st in the world, sees this tournament as a crucial opportunity to prepare for the SAFF Championship, the highest football competition in South Asia. The BFF's involvement in the FIFA ASEAN Cup will also provide financial benefits, as Indonesia will cover all travel and accommodation expenses, along with participation bonuses.

Historically, Bangladesh has been a prominent football team in Asia, particularly during the 1990s. However, issues such as FIFA sanctions and corruption within the federation have hindered the development of the sport in the country. Recent progress has been made since the appointment of coach Javier Cabrera in 2022, and the team is increasingly leveraging the talents of dual-nationality players. A notable addition is Hamza Choudhury, a midfielder with English and Bangladeshi heritage, who has been a regular in the English Premier League since 2015.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will feature 11 Southeast Asian teams along with invited guests, competing in two tiers based on FIFA rankings. Bangladesh will be placed in Group A alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, while Group B will include Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan. The teams will play a round-robin format to determine the finalists.

With the guidance of coach Javier Cabrera and the inclusion of promising players like Hamza Choudhury, Bangladesh aims to make the most of this opportunity to showcase the progress of its football on the regional stage.
