The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently weighing the possibility of withdrawing the Indian national football team from the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. This potential move is aimed at prioritizing a significant friendly match against Brazil, scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Kolkata. If India proceeds with this withdrawal, it could necessitate adjustments to the tournament, which includes Vietnam's participation.

According to the Times of India, the scheduling conflict presents a challenge for the AIFF, as the FIFA ASEAN Cup is set to take place from September 24 to October 3, coinciding with the match against Brazil. The AIFF is under pressure to field its strongest squad for this historic encounter, given that it will be the first time India faces the five-time World Cup champions.

The friendly match against Brazil represents a significant investment, with costs estimated at around 70 crore rupees (approximately 7 million USD). The contract for hosting the match stipulates that Brazil must field a strong lineup, further complicating India's participation in the ASEAN Cup.

While the AIFF has not officially withdrawn from the ASEAN Cup, the federation is exploring various options, including the possibility of fielding different squads for the two events. Head coach Khalid Jamil is being consulted as the AIFF navigates this scheduling dilemma. However, if a suitable solution cannot be found, the likelihood of India withdrawing from the ASEAN Cup remains.

Should India indeed withdraw, the impact on the tournament would be significant, particularly for Group A, where India is placed alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Vietnam, on the other hand, is in Group B with Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan, meaning any changes to India's participation would not directly affect Vietnam's group. The tournament format involves a round-robin stage, determining the top two teams from each group to advance to the finals.

Despite the potential withdrawal of India, which currently ranks 138th in the world, the overall quality and appeal of the FIFA ASEAN Cup could still be affected. As one of the invited teams outside the Southeast Asian region, India's absence would be felt in the tournament.
