Lao Football Players Under Investigation for Match-Fixing Allegations

The Lao Football Federation (LFF) has called for an investigation by local authorities into suspicious activities surrounding its national team's matches in the ASEAN Cup 2026. In a letter sent to the Lao Ministry of Public Security on August 7, the LFF expressed concerns about possible match-fixing and manipulation of results in all four of their Group B matches.

According to the LFF, they have gathered initial evidence and conducted interviews with all players on August 2 and 6. The federation's report indicated a high likelihood of criminal behavior, prompting the request for a formal investigation.

During the tournament, Laos faced a series of defeats, including a 0-5 loss to Thailand, a 0-4 loss to Malaysia, a 1-4 loss to the Philippines, and a 2-7 loss to Myanmar. Notably, player Viengxay scored two own goals in the matches against Malaysia and the Philippines. Additionally, player Phetdavanh Somsanith received a direct red card in the opening match against Thailand, leading to a suspension for the subsequent match against Malaysia. He was again sent off in the following game against the Philippines. In the final match against Myanmar, another player, Sayfon Keoharam, also received a direct red card.

The performance of goalkeeper Keo Souvannasangso drew criticism on social media, particularly for a controversial moment during the match against Malaysia. In the 84th minute, he appeared to misjudge a free kick, leading to speculation about his commitment during the game.

While the LFF has not publicly named any players involved in the alleged match-fixing, they are urging authorities to investigate the serious allegations. The team, coached by Serbian Vladica Grujic, has struggled to maintain the defensive discipline seen in previous tournaments, such as in 2024 when they finished last in their group but managed to score seven goals while conceding only eleven.
